How to Pressure Wash a Driveway

Take a good look at your driveway. Are you noticing grime, mildew, dirt, and stains? Pressure washing your driveway can significantly boost your home’s curb appeal and restore the surface to its original condition without a hefty investment. Before diving in, it’s important to understand that there are two main types of driveways: concrete and brick. The method for pressure washing a driveway will vary based on the material, so let’s explore how to properly pressure wash both types.

How to Pressure Wash a Concrete Driveway

To start, attach your garden hose to the pressure washer and ensure you have the 25-degree nozzle attached. Begin by turning on the hose and giving your driveway a quick blast to remove any loose debris, such as grass, pebbles, small branches, or leaves. This initial step helps clear the surface before applying detergent.

Once the debris is removed, it’s time to apply the detergent. Be sure to use the correct detergent for your pressure washer, as each model requires specific cleaners. Swap to the soaping nozzle, which allows the detergent to soak into the surface rather than being blasted off. Let the detergent sit on the driveway for about 5 minutes to break down the grime, stains, and dirt.

After the detergent has had time to soak in, you can begin the cleaning process. Attach a surface cleaner attachment or a rotary cleaner to your pressure washer for a faster and more efficient clean. Both attachments pulse or rotate the water, helping to dislodge dirt and grime. Finish up by reattaching the 25-degree nozzle and giving the driveway a thorough rinse, removing all detergent and dirt. This will leave your concrete driveway looking refreshed and spotless.

How to Pressure Wash a Brick Driveway

When pressure washing a brick driveway, you’ll need to start by soaking the surface with water using the most delicate spray nozzle you have. This step ensures that the detergent won’t be absorbed into the bricks, which can cause discoloration. After the surface is wet, switch to the detergent nozzle and apply the appropriate cleaner across the entire driveway. Allow it to sit for 5 minutes, just like with the concrete driveway, to allow the detergent to break down any dirt and mildew.

Once the detergent has soaked in, it’s time to rinse the driveway. Use the 25-degree nozzle to carefully rinse the driveway, removing all detergent, dirt, and mildew. The key to cleaning brick driveways is to use more detergent and less water pressure, as high pressure could damage the mortar between the bricks. After the rinse, your brick driveway will look refreshed and rejuvenated.

Additional Tips for Pressure Washing Your Driveway

Before you start pressure washing your driveway, remember to move any cars, toys, or other items that might be in the way. If you’re using a pressure washer for the first time, take a moment to read the manual to familiarize yourself with its proper use. Additionally, always make sure you know which chemicals are safe for use in the detergent tank to avoid damage to your driveway or the surrounding environment.

By following these simple steps for both concrete and brick driveways, you can effectively pressure wash your driveway and restore it to its best condition, enhancing the overall look of your home without breaking the bank.
